Medical training can be a stressful time for pre-health students. It’s a demanding time – both physically and emotionally. It has been associated with high rates of burnout, anxiety, and depression. Ultimately, that stress among healthcare students and professionals can lead to poor work performance, decreased quality of life and patient care.
A national survey conducted in the United States reported burnout among more than half of medical students and residents. The good news: another study finds that medical students who participate in self-care report less stress and a higher quality of life.
It’s important for you to take care of you, and to start NOW! Here are 6 ways to care for yourself as you study and prepare for medical school.
- Get Physical
With all the academic demands, pre-health students often neglect self-care. But it has been shown that regular physical activity can boost your physical and mental health. According to a U.S. News & World report, an old adage of med school training is: “Eat when you can, sit when you can and sleep when you can.” Learning to prioritize physical health can help you improve your overall health and avoid risks for depression and anxiety.
- You’ve got to have friends
Having a support system of family and friends also is important. This can also include study groups, sports or other activities and regular check-ins with friends and relatives.
- Create alone time
When the studying and the demands of pre-health schooling are done, try to find some time away to enjoy the things you like to do — going on a run, reading a book, yoga — any activities that bring you pleasure.
- Breaking good: Take exercise breaks
One way to prevent feeling tired and out of energy is to break your studies into 45 minutes or hourly blocks. Take a quick walk around the block or do some push-ups or other calisthenic exercises to get your blood pumping and feel re-energized.
- Just say “Om”
Give your mind a break too. Meditation is a great way to reset your mind, focus and feel calmer.
- Be a foody
Don’t get distracted, or use up too much time, going in search of food and drinks. Instead, prepare snacks and drinks to keep your energy up during your study sessions.
