Why allied health careers are a great option
While some health professions demand lots of schooling and a large financial investment, allied health careers are a great way to contribute to the talent pipeline and land yourself in a career that is in high demand, according to the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). They’re also called pre-health careers and can be a strategic path to make a career change, advance your career if you are looking to do go to medical school, or are a foreign-educated professional seeking entry to the U.S. workforce.

Topping the list of these pre-health careers are medical assistant, phlebotomy technician and pharmacy technician. Here’s what they do:
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistants or CCMAcomplete administrative and clinical tasks, such as scheduling appointments and taking patient’s vital signs.
- Certified Pharmacy Technicians (CPhT’s) help pharmacists dispense prescription medication to customers or health professionals.
- Certified Phlebotomist Technicians (CPT’s)draw blood for tests, transfusions, research, or blood donations.

● It’s a top demand career. Medical Assistants are in demand. Medical assisting is one of the nation’s careers growing much faster than average for all occupations, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 14 percent from 2022 to 2032, much faster than the average for all occupations. About 114,600 openings for medical assistants are projected each year, on average, over the decade.

As a CCMA, you are the first and last person a patient interacts with, making a lasting impact on the patient experience. 2.Pharmacy Technician
Pharmacy Techs rank #7 in Best Jobs Without A College Degree. According to U.S. News & World Report, Pharmacy Technicians made a median salary of $37,790 in 2022. The best-paid 25% made $45,710 that year, while the lowest-paid 25% made $34,590.Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
Phlebotomy is a growing career field with great prospects, according to U.S. News & World Report. Phlebotomists must have good people skills, as they will interact with patients and may need to help relax individuals who are nervous about having their blood drawn. They should also be detail-oriented, be willing to keep their workspace clean and sanitized, and of course, they should be unbothered by the sight of blood. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 7.7% employment growth for phlebotomists between 2022 and 2032. In that period, an estimated 10,800 jobs should open up.
