The NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam — frequently called the “NHA phlebotomy exam” — had a 77.44% pass rate across exams administered in 2025 (NHA annual report, all exams administered). Candidates who do not pass register again and pay the full exam price. The single biggest variable separating who passes from who fails is the number of timed full-length practice tests taken in the two weeks before exam day.

This post gives you a free 50-question NHA phlebotomy practice exam mapped to the 2026 NHA CPT test plan, organized by knowledge domain in the same proportions as the live exam, with answer explanations. It also covers what’s actually on the exam, how scoring works, and the most common reasons prepared candidates miss the 390 passing scaled score.

Answer Key + Explanations

QAnswerWhy
1cMedian cubital is the first-choice vein — large, well-anchored, away from major nerves and arteries.
2b15-30° for routine straight-needle venipuncture.
3bOrder of draw: yellow → light blue → SST/red → green → lavender → gray.
4cGreen = heparin (sodium or lithium).
5b>1 minute risks hemoconcentration affecting analytes.
6bRelease tourniquet, remove needle, lower head, call for help. Patient safety first.
7b21g standard adult. 23g for fragile veins; 18g for blood donation.
8cBasilic vein has nerve and artery (brachial artery) close by. Use only when median cubital and cephalic are unavailable.
9bHemolysis from vigorous mixing, too-small needle, or vigorous aspiration.
10bLateral or medial heel surface in infants — the central pad has bone close to the surface.
11bQNS = recollect; do not test or dilute.
12bGlucose drops ~7 mg/dL/hr at room temp without preservative. Use gray-top (sodium fluoride) for delayed glucose testing.
13cRed top (no additive) = serum chemistries.
14bLavender = EDTA, used for hematology (CBC).
15bButterfly is preferred for hand veins, fragile veins, pediatric draws.
25aTwo patient identifiers required by Joint Commission.
26bFasting glucose: 8-12 hours.
27bAcknowledge fear, position lying down, calm explanation, look-away.
28aTwo unique identifiers (typically name + DOB or name + MRN).
29aAlways check the wristband against the requisition. Room numbers can be wrong.
30cDraw from the opposite arm or alternate site to avoid IV-fluid contamination.
31bHand hygiene is the most effective infection control.
32cSharps containers replaced at the 75% fill line.
33bStandard precautions = treat all blood/body fluids as potentially infectious.
34bWash with soap and water, report immediately. Do not wait.
35aOSHA: annual training, exposure control plan, free HBV vaccination.
36aRoutine venipuncture: gloves required. Add gown/mask/eye protection only for splash risk.
37cRed biohazard bag for blood-soaked materials.
38bBlood culture: antiseptic skin prep, aerobic + anaerobic bottles, correct volume.
39bChlorhexidine or povidone-iodine, allowed to dry. Alcohol alone is insufficient for blood culture.
40bGTT: fasting + glucose load + timed samples.
41bVancomycin: trough mandatory; peak sometimes.
42bLavender (EDTA): 5-8 gentle inversions.
43aBleeding time = standardized cut, timed cessation. Largely replaced by other tests.
44bHeel stick: lateral or medial plantar, warmed first.
45bC. diff: gown + gloves + soap-and-water (alcohol gel doesn’t kill spores).
46bSerum tube: clot first (30 min), then centrifuge.
47bLabel at the bedside in patient’s presence. Never leave bed before labeling.
48aCommon rejection reasons: hemolysis, clotted, mislabeled, QNS, wrong tube.
49aRefrigerated specimens: 2-8°C.
50bAmmonia: on ice, process quickly to avoid degradation.

How the NHA CPT Exam is Scored

  • Range: 200-500
  • Passing: 390
  • Scaled score; NHA converts a raw cut score and does not publish it as a percentage of questions answered correctly

You’ll see your pass/fail result immediately at the test center. Official scaled scores arrive within 2 business days. Failures get a domain-by-domain breakdown.

Why Otherwise-Prepared Candidates Fail

  1. Underweighting Routine Blood Collection. It’s 47% of the exam — should be 50%+ of study time.
  2. Skipping the order-of-draw memorization. It’s the most-tested single concept and the most clinically critical.
  3. Memorizing tube colors without additives or use cases. You need all three (color → additive → use case) for any tube you might be asked about.
  4. Skipping safety domain. It’s only 14% but every question is a high-confidence point if you know basic OSHA, PPE, and infection control.
  5. Not practicing under timed conditions. Two hours is enough only if you can pace 1 minute per question. Practice timed.

Ready to stop studying alone? HealthCerts’ Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) program is built around a 4-week online course with externship placement — so you walk out with both the credential and the clinical hours employers want.

Common phlebotomy practice exam nha questions break into three buckets — eligibility, cost, and timeline. The phlebotomy practice exam nha answer to each depends on which credentialing body you target and which state you live in. Use the phlebotomy practice exam nha details below as a baseline; verify state-specific rules with your state regulator before enrolling.

I very much enjoyed my experience with my NHA CCMA certification process. I gained all the knowledge required for the field as well as received practice material for the actual exam. The only downside is that some of the practice material is not as relevant to the actual certification exam as it should be, but otherwise it was great!

HealthCareer Certs was an incredible option for me both financially and flexibility wise. Being able to take this course (MA-C) at my own pace, without having to sacrifice work or my paycheck (significantly more affordable then an in-person MA program) was all the motivation I needed to get this done. HealthCareer Certs also put me in contact with someone at UW Medicine to which I quickly got an externship that turned into 2 job offers following. All questions I had along the way were answered within 24hrs every time. The material was very digestible and easy to understand. The practice tests along the way were helpful, and able to be taken more than once. I'm very thankful to have passed the NHA CCMA exam my first time due to HealthCareer Certs program.

I love that you always have access to the teaching staff if you have questions, and they are always there to answer your questions (usually really quickly!) whether they are logistical, related to course content, or related to finding a job. HealthCareer Certs is a great way to earn certifications online. Their courses are self-paced and flexible, which makes it ideal for those who are still in school or work full time. The instructors were helpful and responded in a timely manner. The only reason I didn\u2019t give a full five stars was because the content for the CCMA course, although similar, didn\u2019t include some of the information that was in the NHA study guides\/rubric.

10 out of 10, instructors were so kind and willing to answer any questions\n\nHealthCareer Certs was overall 10 out of 10, instructors were so kind and willing to answer any questions throughout the course at any given time. For someone like me who was eager to step foot in the field after just receiving my bachelors in biology, I found this course to be greatly structured. I was able to get certified while taking some time to travel, thanks to the course being online, I studied anywhere and everywhere. Would definitely recommend!

I earned my CCMA certificate with HCC by taking their CCMA class. The class itself contains extremely useful information that is that is not only practically applicable to working as a CCMA but absolutely necessary. I've kept lots of notes from this course that I will definitely use on the job as a CCMA. While the course content is interesting, applicable, and thorough, I did notice that it does not closely match the content of the CCMA exam. The CCMA exam covers coding\/billing content, but this is not covered in the class! Additionally, the course material is highly saturated with anatomy and physiology content (including some cell biology), but the exam hardly covers this material! You can imagine why I was frustrated to find that all my hours and hours of studying this material did not pay off in the exam. I questioned whether I should have purchased a different course for this reason, but I decided I was content with HCC; the HCC course covers material that is nonetheless necessary for working in the real world as a CCMA. Despite my qualms with the discrepancy between course content and exam content, I still believe the course content is absolutely worth learning because it more accurately represents what you need to know as a CCMA. Besides, I was still able to pass the exam on the first try. Other thoughts: the instructors are very quick to respond to questions via email. Because there is SO much content included in this course, I would recommend prioritizing the iCEV modules; I found them the most detailed and helpful.

I loved HealthCareer Certs and I believe it is the perfect course to getting your Medical Assistant certification and even license in some states! They take care of you! They were able to connect me with an externship and had streamlined the process for studying and getting my externship. The content was very thorough and I learned a lot. Just a few critiques that could really push them to the next level. Focus on coding and billing!!! The exam covers this heavily and it is needed. Also maybe focus on specific content relevant to the exam from past students as that is heavily important. For anyone wondering if this is worth the money let me save you some time and tell you, yes it is!

I completed the CPT program through Health Career Certs, and it prepared me very well for the NHA exam. I felt confident and well-equipped thanks to the curriculum. One piece of advice: I highly recommend making connections and researching early to see if local hospitals or facilities will allow you to complete your externship there while still working through the program. The process of starting an externship after passing the exam can take some time, so planning ahead can really help. Overall, a great program!
