CCMA Certification Eligibility Requirements in Maryland

To pursue CCMA certification in Maryland, you’ll need to meet specific educational and legal criteria. These requirements are designed to ensure you’re ready for both the training and the national certification exam.

Education Requirements

To enroll in CCMA training programs and qualify for the NHA certification exam, you must have a high school diploma or GED. Many Maryland institutions also have additional prerequisites. For example, Carroll Community College requires students to complete First Aid and CPR classes and attend a mandatory orientation before starting core coursework. Since many programs include online components, you’ll need to demonstrate computer literacy and have reliable internet access.

Before beginning your clinical externship, you’ll need to provide proof of immunity or vaccinations for MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap, and seasonal influenza, along with a negative TB test completed at least two weeks prior to the start of the program. These steps ensure you’re both academically and clinically prepared for certification in Maryland.

Once your educational requirements are in order, it’s time to review the legal and age-related criteria.

Age and Legal Requirements

Candidates must be at least 18 years old. However, Maryland offers Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways for high school students, starting as early as 8th grade, with full CCMA programs available in grades 9–12.

You’ll also need to pass a criminal background check and a urine drug screening to qualify for clinical externships. These screenings, which are typically the student’s financial responsibility, cost about $850 combined. Be aware that some externship sites may disqualify applicants who hold medical cannabis cards if they test positive for THC.

In addition to tuition, plan for other expenses such as background checks, drug tests, uniforms, closed-toe nurse shoes, and the $169 fee for the NHA CCMA exam. Maryland community college programs typically cost between $3,655 and $5,433, so budgeting for these additional costs is essential.

How to Prepare for the NHA CCMA Exam

Once you’ve completed your coursework and externship, the next step is passing the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) CCMA exam to earn your certification. HealthCareer Certs includes thorough exam prep tools in your tuition to help you feel ready when test day arrives.

What’s on the NHA CCMA Exam

The NHA CCMA exam (Version 3.0) tests your knowledge across three key areas: clinical procedures, administrative tasks, and essential soft skills for healthcare environments. You’ll encounter questions on topics like taking vital signs, assisting during provider exams, administering injections and medications, performing EKGs, and phlebotomy. The administrative section covers tasks such as managing Electronic Health Records (EHR), patient check-ins and check-outs, phone etiquette, and scheduling appointments. Additionally, the exam places a strong emphasis on soft skills like professionalism, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and adaptability.

"Professionalism and critical thinking are the most important soft skills employers are looking for, when hiring a clinical medical assistant." – National Healthcareer Association

You can take the exam at your school, a PSI testing center, or via live remote proctoring from home. For online exams, NHA typically posts your official certification results to your account within two days after scoring.

Study Materials and Practice Tools

HealthCareer Certs provides a variety of study resources to help you identify and address any weak areas. These include over 1,400 practice questions and 700 self-checks that mimic the actual exam format. You’ll also have access to three versions of online practice tests, each allowing two attempts. These tests integrate with NHA’s Focused Review® feature, which evaluates your performance and creates a personalized study plan to target specific gaps.

The interactive online study guide includes games, quizzes, and mobile flashcards that encourage active recall, a proven method for strengthening memory connections. Through the NHA Mobile app, you can study during brief breaks, keeping your momentum steady. The program also offers EHR simulations, enabling hands-on practice with tasks like patient registration, medication reconciliation, and documenting vital signs.

NHA CCMA Exam Sections and Study Strategies

Each section of the exam requires a unique preparation approach. The table below outlines strategies and tools available through your HealthCareer Certs program to help you succeed:

Exam Focus Area Recommended Study Strategy Tool/Resource
Clinical Procedures Hands-on simulation and step-by-step review EHR Simulations (vitals, lab orders)
Administrative Tasks Workflow practice and documentation EHR Simulations (scheduling, referrals)
Soft Skills Observational learning and situational judgment Professionalism tips videos
General Knowledge Active recall and gap analysis Mobile flashcards and Practice Tests
Patient Interaction Communication-focused review Patient Experience Coach videos

Kick off your preparation by downloading the free NHA CCMA Test Plan, which details the key concepts and content weightings covered on the exam. Use your first practice test as a diagnostic tool to activate the Focused Review® feature, then retake the test to track your progress. Focus on high-weight topics and carve out extra time to fine-tune your soft skills.

How to Apply for the CCMA Exam and Meet Maryland Requirements

Submit Your NHA CCMA Exam Application

After finishing your coursework and externship, the next step is to apply for the NHA CCMA exam. Start by creating a free account on the National Healthcareer Association website. Be sure to select your affiliated school or employer to access any discounts or pre-purchased study materials they might offer.

Complete the application online, pay the exam fee, and schedule your test. You can choose from three testing options: on-site, at a PSI testing center, or through live remote proctoring. If you opt for remote testing, make sure to run the PSI Technical Compatibility tool beforehand to confirm that your system is supported – Chromebooks, for example, aren’t compatible. Once you apply, you’ll have six months to schedule and take the exam. Don’t forget to bring a valid government-issued photo ID on test day.

Before starting your externship, double-check that you meet Maryland’s clinical prerequisites.

Maryland-Specific Clinical Requirements

To begin clinical work in Maryland, you’ll need to meet the state’s health and safety standards. This includes providing proof of vaccinations for MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Influenza, and Tetanus, as well as a recent TB test or chest X-ray. Additionally, you’ll need a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers.

Most training programs and externship sites also require a criminal background check and a 10-panel urine drug test before placement. Keep in mind that even with a medical cannabis card, failing a drug test can disqualify you. Some facilities may charge a pre-enrollment fee for these screenings and might also require a medical exam to confirm you’re capable of performing medical assistant duties. These steps are designed to ensure you’re fully prepared for clinical practice in Maryland.

If you have questions about Maryland’s specific regulations for clinical practice, you can reach out to the Maryland Board of Nursing at (410) 585-1900. While the CCMA is a national certification, aligning with state requirements is a crucial step toward launching your career.

Conclusion

To earn your CCMA certification in Maryland, you’ll need to meet specific education, training, and externship requirements before passing the NHA exam. These include having a high school diploma or GED, completing a training program that covers both clinical and administrative skills, and gaining 40 to 140 hours of supervised externship experience. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of medical assistants to grow 13 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations, with about 109,700 openings projected each year, on average, over the decade.

HealthCareer Certs simplifies the process with 100% online coursework, hands-on clinical kits, and externship placement. This eliminates the hassle of securing externship sites and prepares you for hands-on patient care.

HealthCareer Certs was an incredible option for me both financially and flexibility wise. Being able to take this course (MA-C) at my own pace, without having to sacrifice work or my paycheck (significantly more affordable then an in-person MA program) was all the motivation I needed to get this done. 10 out of 10, instructors were so kind and willing to answer any questions\n\nHealthCareer Certs was overall 10 out of 10, instructors were so kind and willing to answer any questions throughout the course at any given time. For someone like me who was eager to step foot in the field after just receiving my bachelors in biology, I found this course to be greatly structured. I was able to get certified while taking some time to travel, thanks to the course being online, I studied anywhere and everywhere. Would definitely recommend!

I earned my CCMA certificate with HCC by taking their CCMA class. The class itself contains extremely useful information that is that is not only practically applicable to working as a CCMA but absolutely necessary. I've kept lots of notes from this course that I will definitely use on the job as a CCMA. While the course content is interesting, applicable, and thorough, I did notice that it does not closely match the content of the CCMA exam. The CCMA exam covers coding\/billing content, but this is not covered in the class! Additionally, the course material is highly saturated with anatomy and physiology content (including some cell biology), but the exam hardly covers this material! You can imagine why I was frustrated to find that all my hours and hours of studying this material did not pay off in the exam. I questioned whether I should have purchased a different course for this reason, but I decided I was content with HCC; the HCC course covers material that is nonetheless necessary for working in the real world as a CCMA. Despite my qualms with the discrepancy between course content and exam content, I still believe the course content is absolutely worth learning because it more accurately represents what you need to know as a CCMA. Besides, I was still able to pass the exam on the first try. Other thoughts: the instructors are very quick to respond to questions via email. Because there is SO much content included in this course, I would recommend prioritizing the iCEV modules; I found them the most detailed and helpful.

I loved HealthCareer Certs and I believe it is the perfect course to getting your Medical Assistant certification and even license in some states! They take care of you! They were able to connect me with an externship and had streamlined the process for studying and getting my externship. The content was very thorough and I learned a lot. Just a few critiques that could really push them to the next level. Focus on coding and billing!!! The exam covers this heavily and it is needed. Also maybe focus on specific content relevant to the exam from past students as that is heavily important. For anyone wondering if this is worth the money let me save you some time and tell you, yes it is!

I felt confident and well-equipped thanks to the curriculum. The instructions were always available and willing to help with the course material and anything else I needed. Their support and guidance made all the difference. I passed the exam with flying colors. Can't recommend this course enough! Thank you HCC!

I completed the CPT program through Health Career Certs, and it prepared me very well for the NHA exam. I felt confident and well-equipped thanks to the curriculum. One piece of advice: I highly recommend making connections and researching early to see if local hospitals or facilities will allow you to complete your externship there while still working through the program. The process of starting an externship after passing the exam can take some time, so planning ahead can really help. Overall, a great program!
